Yesterday, the Virginia General Assembly did NOT pass Governor Northam’s proposal to move May local elections to November. What does that mean?
In practical terms, right now, the Fredericksburg City election is still May 5th.
While the Governor has the authority to delay the May 5 election until May 19th, and some legislators are asking the Governor to call for a special session to consider other options, most importantly, it means that votes already received by the Registrar’s office WILL NOT BE DISCARDED.
Our Registrar has advised us that the City of Fredericksburg is proceeding forward to administer a local election on May 5th.
What should you do?
If you have not yet requested an absentee ballot, please request one now. Here are the step-by-step instructions for our Registrar’s office:
https://www.fredericksburgva.gov/534/Voter-Registrar
Currently, the last day to request your ballot is in just a few days – April 28th.
But please do not wait until the 28th – Request your ballot now.
When you receive your absentee ballot, mail your completed ballot (according to the instructions) immediately or drop it into the Red Drop Box.
If you have a ballot that you have not yet mailed, now is the time to either mail in your ballots or drop them into the red drop box in front of the Executive Plaza Office Building.
Voting by mail is certainly the SAFEST way to vote.
Many Delegates and Senators expressed grave concerns about the safety of voters and poll workers. I share those concerns.
The one sure way to protect yourself, poll workers and our community – and still have a voice in City government – is to vote by mail now.
Please visit https://www.jonforcitycouncil.com/press-releases/city-of-fredericksburg-vote-by-mail-instructions for more details about how to request, complete and return your absentee ballot.
Even while social distancing, please spread the word about the Fredericksburg City Elections. You can start by sharing this email with other Fredericksburg residents.
