Voter Information

We are Virginians. We vote.

In Virginia, we have at least one election every year. The Fredericksburg community should be very proud of their extraordinary commitment as voters.

General Election

The City of Fredericksburg's Election on May 19, 2020 is for Mayor, At-large City Council, and At-large School Board.

Here is some important information for voting:

The deadline to register to vote in the Fredericksburg City Election has passed. However, you can still register to vote for other upcoming elections.

Important Date: Monday, April 13

Last day to register or update registration and vote in May 5 election

Voter Registration is straightforward.

You must be:

  • a US Citizen
  • a Virginia Resident
  • 18 years old (by November 3, 2020)
  • and have not been convicted of a felony*

You can register to vote online at the Virginia Department of Elections or the Voter Registrar’s office.

Check Your Registration

Usually your voter registration is a set it and forget it. However, please check your voter registration regularly. People are removed from the rolls regularly - it is much easier to resolve an issue before Election Day.

If you have moved or changed your name, you need to update your voter registration.

Usually that can be accomplished online at the Virginia Department of Elections or Voter Registrar’s office.

Special Info for UMW students

University of Mary Washington students, living on campus or in the city, are eligible to register to vote in the City of Fredericksburg.

The Fredericksburg Election Registrar has detailed information about students registering to vote.

If you are registered to vote using your UMW address, you will need to vote Early/Absentee for the May 19 2020 election.

Encourage Others to Vote

Be that person. Ask the question:

“Did you know there are four elections this year? Are you registered to vote? It’s so important!”

Tell them to google “Voting in Virginia”- the first several choices are all the Department of Elections, or have them use our Contact Us form and ask about registering to vote and we’ll take it from there.

Their vote is their voice.

*Rights Restoration

People with felony convictions are not eligible to vote.

However, after serving their sentence, these individuals can petition the Governor to have their rights restored.

Please visit the Virginia Secretary of the Commonwealth's Restoration of Rights Information or Records Search for complete details. Assistance is available to those who would like their voting right restored.

ABSENTEE BALLOTS

If you have an absentee ballot and have not yet returned it, please do so TODAY by using the Red Drop Box in front of the Executive Plaza Office Building (601 Caroline Street).

It’s really too late to mail your ballot now; if you drop it off in the Red Drop Box, you can be certain it will be counted if the ballot is received in the Red Drop Box by 7 PM on Tuesday May 19th.

Do not take your absentee ballot to the Dorothy Hart Community Center polling place

VOTING ON TUESDAY MAY 19th

) will be open on Tuesday May 19th.

Election Day Polls will be open from 6:00am-7:00pm

Voting in-person will take place at this location and this location ONLY on May 19th from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.  If you normally vote at a different polling place, those places will not be open on Election Day.

Much of the voting will be done curbside by election officials. They will be taking the appropriate safety precautions (masks, gloves, single use pens, etc) and it is equally important that voters take similar precautions.  The Registar asks that only people who are actually voting in-person tomorrow come to Dorothy Hart Community Center in order to minimize the number of people there at any one time.

Traffic will be directed by the City Police.

Everyone involved is prepared to manage this voting day successfully. I am grateful for their planning and dedication - and truly hope people who vote that day are patient and kind.

Do not bring your absentee ballot to Dorothy Hart Community Center.  Drop your absentee ballot in the Red Drop Box at 601 Caroline Street (corner of Wolfe).
